Former OK School for the Blind superintendent Larry Hawkins to serve as interim during nationwide search

MUSKOGEE, Okla. – Larry Hawkins will start his first day as interim superintendent at the Oklahoma School for the Blind on March 1. Hawkins previously served as OSB superintendent for 18 months in 2010 and 2011.

OSB is a division of the Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitation Services.

Hawkins’ appointment was one of the first major decisions by Interim DRS Executive Director Noel Tyler.

School for the Blind students compete in regional math and engineering contest in Muskogee

MUSKOGEE, Okla. – Excited students filled the Muskogee Civic Center last week to compete with mouse trap race cars, rubber band shooters and their amazing math skills for the Muskogee Area Educational Consortium’s Math & Engineering competition.

Students from 36 schools attended from around the eastern Oklahoma region, including seven high schoolers from the Oklahoma School for the Blind.

Tenth grader Cameron Hughes said, "It’s not about winning, it's about sportsmanship, doing your best, and having the courage to try."

School for the Deaf women’s basketball team, cheerleaders win regional championship

SULPHUR, Okla. -- Oklahoma School for the Deaf Lady Indians won the regional Great Plains Schools for the Deaf basketball championship last weekend.

The team took top honors at a tournament hosted by Wisconsin School for the Deaf where they also
won both the three-point and free throw competitions.

Three team members were named to the all-tournament team: Haley Runels from Tulsa, Va'Licia Penny from Hominy and Sara Dobbs from Ada.

Oklahoma School for the Blind to host Braille Challenge® competition Feb. 26

MUSKOGEE, Okla. –Oklahoma School for the Blind is gearing up to host another exciting Oklahoma Regional Braille Challenge® competition on Feb. 26 in Muskogee.

Twenty-five Braille-readers from OSB and other schools across Oklahoma are pre-registered for the contest, which will take place from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on the OSB campus at 3300 Gibson Street.

Braille Challenge® is a national program of the Braille Institute of America in Los Angeles.
